"A Priest's Story" was written by Dorothy Rabinowitz,
a member of the Wall Street Journal's editorial board,
and originally ran in the WSJ editorial pages on April 27 and 28,
2005.
On April 30, 2005, the WSJ posted the article as a single article
on its OpinionJournal Web editorial page, with minor revisions and
a pointedly modified title. Instead of "The trial of Father
Gordon MacRae" and "The conviction of Father Gordon MacRae,"
the Web version was subtitled "Not all accounts of sex abuse
in the Catholic Church turn out to be true." Above the title,
the WSJ ran in red NO CRUELER TYRANNIES.
These changes are significant, because they explicitly connect
the MacRae essay, as its print version had not been connected, to
Ms. Rabinowitz's book on the prosecution of day care workers for
child abuse, No Crueler Tyrannies: Accusation, False Witness,
and Other Terrors of Our Times (New York: Wall Street Journal
Books, published by Free Press, 2003). Rabinowitz is also the author
of New Lives: Survivors of the Holocaust Living in America
(New York: Random House, 1976).
