One lawsuit accuses a teacher and a priest who worked at Our Mother of
Sorrows parish of abusing a student about 1970. Gary Kazmarek taught one
year at the school, 1968-69, according to a church history done in 1987.
Kazmarek also coached a basketball team at the school, according to the
plaintiff. Magel [see photo] is retired and is refraining from public
ministry because of the allegation, said Cecelia Price, a spokeswoman
for the archdiocese.
PLAINTIFF: Ronald Kuhl
AGE: 46
ADDRESS: Jefferson County
OCCUPATION: Machinist
FILED SUIT: June 28
DEFENDANT: Archdiocese of Louisville
DATE AND LOCATION OF ALLEGED ABUSE: About 1970, Our Mother
of Sorrows, Kazmarek's home, Nolin Lake.
ACCUSATION: Kazmarek is accused of oral sex, attempted
sodomy and masturbation. Magel is accused of exposing himself.
DETAILS OF ALLEGATION: Kuhl said Kazmarek taught at the
school and coached a basketball team for two seasons, which was how Kuhl
knew him. Once when he was walking across the church parking lot, Kazmarek
said that his back hurt and he needed Kuhl to help him. Kuhl said Kazmarek
took him to his home and abused him. Kuhl said Magel and a group of boys
went on a camping trip at Nolin Lake when the priest left his room naked
and started making lunch. "I said I wasn't hungry," Kuhl said.
WAS ANYONE TOLD? No
IN THE PLAINTIFF'S WORDS: "I just didn't tell. It
was something that I didn't like what happened."
